BBC4: The background to Dark Days is almost as incredible as the film itself. How did you first come to the story of people living in the tunnels? Marc Singer: Where I lived at the time there were homeless everywhere. I'd see the same people on the street all the time. Out of curiosity I just started hanging out and making friends in my neighbourhood. I met one guy who mentioned the tunnels. He heard that you could build a house down there and live somewhat normally but still be homeless. And that just fascinated me so I went exploring.

BBC Four: Did you go with him? MS: No, by myself. I went into almost every tunnel I could get into until I found the one that we ended up making the film in.

BBC Four: What made you want to make this documentary after you'd been down there? MS: I was in the tunnels and on the streets all day and all night. I soon realised the people were absolutely nothing as how I had expected them to be. Whenever you see anything about homelessness you always see the same thing - a man or woman sitting on the street feeling sorry for themselves. But what I saw were people who weren't feeling sorry for themselves. They had made the best out of a very bad situation. So I had a lot of respect for everybody and didn't want to see them living in the tunnel - they deserved better. One day we were sitting around the fire and I think Ralph said, "Somebody should be making a film about this." And I said, "Why don't we do it?" We reckoned we could make this film, sell it, and the money we made would get everybody out. At the same time they would be the whole film crew because that way they're helping themselves get out of the tunnel.

BBC4: How difficult was it to film in the dark and underground? MS: You just said it - it's dark and it's underground! You can't see yourself most of the time. We had to rig the tunnel for filming - we tapped into electricity and ran nearly 40 blocks of wire up and down the tunnel. We had little difficulties that are funny to look back on now - you'd put your hand into the changing bag and there'd be a rat in there. What do you do - change the film or kill the rat? At the same time you're living on the street. All of us were starving. We had to search through the garbage for food while we were making the film. But you have to be really creative just to survive on the street so when it came to making the film there was nothing that was out of reach.

If you are considering training to become a leader in your faith, the first thing you should do is ask your own religious leader for advice and guidance.

The process of becoming a leader can take several years, because it is often based on your knowledge, experience and standing within the religion. You may have to convince other leaders and members of your religion that you are truly committed before you can start training.

In some religions there are rules on who can become a leader. For example, some faiths do not accept women. Some would expect you to remain unmarried and not form any other close personal relationships.

FRUSTRATED? Listen, your life can be an incredible and satisfying thing, but there are forces at work which deny you that. They make you bored. They make you hate yourself. They destroy your ability to find fulfillment in yourself and other people. They sell you cheap plastic substitutes for the REAL THING. For all our bitching, though, we're with you. We have no easy solutions. There are none. The choices are escape -- be it through drugs, suicide, or madness -- or struggle. We choose the latter, hoping that struggle itself will at least dull the pain in a non-self-destructive way. We are not Puritanical, we are pissed off! We want to be able to indulge our primitive desires. The difference is that we see the options for indulgence presented by this culture as inherently and deliberately unfulfilling. We have all been raised to be anxious and dissatisfied consumers, constantly in search of the right "fix". Well, Abrupt isn't buying any of it. At the very least, we hope to create an awareness of some of these problems, and perhaps give hope to people who currently just survive from day to day. Do you think? That is, are there ideas in your head that are at least partially your own? (And even a creative synthesis of old ideas is better than repeating the same old commercial patter minute after minute.) Then make it move -- find the words or the motions or the bodies that can carry your thoughts into the steam and whistles of the real world. It's doesn't help much sitting in your head -- take it to the streets! Spray-paint stencils of cryptic symbols, ornament trash cans and cracking sidewalks, leave a message in a bottle with your address in it, sing in public restrooms, scratch your words on school desks and playgrounds, singe their skin with your molecular love, put up hundreds of flyers anonymously, make loud Doppler-shift sounds as you pass people on the street, or lace bank windows with shaving cream question marks. At every moment a million possibilities lie open, beckoning the explorer to break the patterns that trap and enchain, to find new ones that drive back the darkness. We adhere to the credo "Make your mark heavy and dark.' (Plus the qualifier, "If you must erase, erase completely.") It seems that beneath the bureaucratic blandness and psychic trauma of our high school years was a call to action, an ontological rallying cry for those frantic souls out there who despaired of finding their voice. Make your mark heavy and dark. Be decisive. Know when to stop planning and act, and be ready to defend your position. Realize that you can't please everybody, and use to your advantage the prejudices of those who disagree with you. CONFUSED? Sure, everyone is responsible for his or her actions; you can't just run away. But that responsibility is the price you pay for freedom -- and that's not the freedom to buy any brand of shampoo you want. We're talking about the freedom to set your sights higher than the school-work-nervous-breakdown cycle that most of us find ourselves in. Ask yourself, are you a hamster, or a human being? Do you dare to step off the treadmill and run amok in the pet store? If nothing else, it can be fun. And dangerous. But more importantly, you might learn to twist your perception enough to see the window, and the world beyond the pet store. It's a world much bigger than you could ever see in its entirety, much stranger than drugs or God or UFO's, but it's there. It's already around you right now; you've just forgotten how to see it: even as mass communications and transportation have made our planet seem a thousand times bigger than before, our private worlds have atrophied. Perception has been narrowed to a single dim point, experience has become an alternating parade of "stimulation" and frustration. We have memories, but our memories no longer tell a story. We have voices, but we have nothing to say. The struggle to survive no longer inspires us to transcend mere survival, so that at the moment of our greatest technological achievement we have become emotional infants, floundering in a pool of frustrated desires and failed illusions. Still, all is not lost. There will always be a demon in the human spirit, an animal raging in its cage. It can only be beaten or anesthetized so much before it gets fed up and breaks out, dragging its owner to either prison or Paradise. The nature of its restraints will determine the nature of its escape; as things stand now, most options for real animal passion are devastating, not to mention illegal. Rape, suicide, murder: symptoms of constriction, the starved Animal blindly feeding itself into extinction. These are not the only options. There are healthier ones, and they need not take the form of sudden outbursts or compulsions. No, under healthier conditions, the release valves would be built in to our daily lives. Not a sudden seizure of hate, but a million tiny outlets would appease the monster inside us, or at least keep its rage in balance with its beauty, so that each of us would harbor a proud tiger, and not a rabid, mangy dog. Defeatism is seductive, it's true, and despair beckons at every corner when you look at what has been done to us over the past several decades. But total despair is useless, because it just reinforces the feelings of helplessness which you've been taught from day one. The only solution must start with the assumption that existence need not be miserable, and with the knowledge that the current state of affairs is relatively recent. Instead of giving up in any of the billion ways that you are told to give up, take an active role in pursuing life's potential for intensity. Fight the pall of laziness and helplessness that weighs down on you all day long. You owe it to yourself to struggle. GET MAD!! Think about some of these things we've said. You'll have to, since we can only tell you so much before we run out of words. It's up to you to figure out what your own strengths are, and what exactly is wrong with you. Perhaps you will find out there's much more wrong with you than you thought. Perhaps not. Just remember that this life is yours, and if nothing else, you deserve a shot at living it well. Do you believe this? Then begin making your plans today.

The 10 Commandments of Karaoke A few guidelines for participants of Dallas Ft Worth shows 1. Thou shalt not walk in front of the monitor when someone is singing. It is extremely distracting and very rude. Submit your next song between singers! If sitting or standing close to singer keep conversation low. No loud yelling, laughing or heckling. This only makes it hard for the singer! Remember it may be your turn next! Ask everyone at your table to be quiet while they sing. Do not distract the singer... 2. Thou shalt always applaud for every singer. It doesn't matter how good or bad you think they are we all need encouragement. Someday you may be up there singing also... besides, we all up in here to have fun! 3. Thou shalt not sing back up for someone or get up on stage for any reason unless they specifically ask you to. Don't put them on the spot by asking them while they are on stage. Ask only before you turn in the song to be sung. Dancing is permitted while singer is singing in most places. It shows a complement to the singer... So get up and get on down! 4. Thou shalt make sure the numbers you submit for your songs are correct. Putting down the wrong numbers and letters only slows up the show. If the KJ is nice and willing to wait for you to find the right number or just move to the next singer. It's always kool to double check your numbers before you give your song to the KJ in charge. 5. Thou shalt not continuously ask the KJ when it will be your turn to sing. The KJ has enough to do without your distractions, and silly stories while they are working. Always remember that when new singers come in they will be worked into the rotation which means, it may take a litter longer for you to sing...so chill, yo! 6. Thou shalt not "Boo" at the singers or make derogatory remarks. We are all here to have fun. Cussin ain't allowed on the stage while talking out yo backside into the microphone cause you may be asked to step down. If your KJ encourages cussing by doing it themselves, ask them to please stop...unless you like that sort of thing, or if there are kids there! 7. Thou shalt not get up on stage to sing a DUET with someone ...without first asking them permission to do so If you do, they may say bad things 'bout Cho Momma and the bar peoples will hate you! 8. Thou shalt treat the microphone with respect. The equipment is very expensive, depending on where you're singing. Don’t swing it around with the cord like the guy from The Who... don't drop it or slobber all over it. Germs are everywhere! Be sure to wash your hands when returning from the rest room so you will be practicing safe karaoke, and won't be gettin yo booty juice on the mic! Cause you might get the "Rockin' Pneumonia, and The Boogie Woogie Flu" 9. Thou shalt not gripe if someone else sings a song you like to sing After all, you don't own exclusive rights to the song. Dear St Martins, i am writing this because i feel that it is bad to leave without explanation... I am leaving St. Martins. Since making this decision I have been more happy than I have felt in a long time. I am happy because i don’t want to exhibit my work to people who have no real interest I don’t want to have private views, where welthy people drink themselves into a state of catharsis. I am also free of the label of St. Martins, the label being the only real thing about the college. The most powerful thing about my time at St. Martins was this interaction “what do you do” “I go to art school” “where” “St. Martins” (mixed reactions of awe and respect.) By going to St. Matins you implicate yourself in it’s glorious history and everyone you meet assumes you’re a really good artist. I fed off this and became creatively apathetic, which is think the institution has as well. St matins is boring. Nothing is questioned or moved. I met more diverse and interesting people at 6th form college. Everyone is scared of taking risks. Fashion is the whole ethos of the college, and not surprisingly fashion is what it does best. What’s real in at martins is money. Everyone there is rich or has aspirations of wealth, and this becomes very apparent in the way they think about art. Crits are a confusing and often demoralising affair. Which I often left feeling like I’d talked myself out of any meaning. We all have different reference points and codes. Its incredible difficult to engage with and i end up finding there are no answers, or perhaps even questions. and that’s when people try, more often than not we sit in silence after looking at someones work. Because the art school was my environment all my work turned into institutional critique, which is boring. St martins has good facikities and some great technicians. If you have a clear idea about what you want to make and what you need to learn to make it, st martins could provide a space for focus and a platform for promotion. Plus social networks.if your interested in keeping uo to date with and participating in the main stream art world it is good too. It is a heavily theory based course with little or no taught theory. For the past year have felt like a consumer, not that the course was something i cared about or was in charge of rather a bad product I couldn’t be bothered to return. This is largely my own fault but also a reaction to my surroundings. Having never entered an educartioal institution until I was 16 being in that environment was not something I took for granted. I am proud to say all my educational decisions have been made with care and anylsis by myself and with no one to answer too. and we saw that there is oftena feeling of resignation about the place. it's all falling apart

I don't get why people have a problem with this, if the developer can afford to leave this building empty (recent changes in the law require landlords to pay full rates even when their properties are empty, they can avoid these rates by providing free spaces to non-profit causes such as art exhibitions etc), then they can pick up the court tab. Landlords and property developers need to invest in the areas they have buildings in rather than sit back and do nothing. Plus these are productive squatters who take pride in the spaces they inhabit and provide a deterrent for vandalism and arson. They are certainly giving more back to the area than the former language school that the building previously hosted (the type of bogus "colleges" currently under investigation) Report this comment as inappropriate 2. The Otherwise Club Movie.I have been hired with Jack Reid to make a film with the kids (ages 6-13) at the Otherwise Club, a community centre for families that choose not to send their children to school in Kilburn. The above picture is from a scene where a family get taken back in time to VE Day, 1945.We have taken a very traditional approach to making this film. With me and Jack acting perhaps as EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS. It has made me rethink and clarify my own film making process by trying to recreate this traditional structure with the kids. It has given me a better understanding of what it really means to 'make a film' but also made me want to find new structures. I want to try and make a film with a large cast and crew and just make decisions on CONSENSUS. Traditional film making is HIERARCHY. with the actors (creatively) at the bottom. Unfortunately our actors have realised this and are getting very impatient with the production team. Mine and jack's role is to mediate between the two and encourage communication, which seems to be the most important thing on set. Next week, i have suggested that the production team meet before the actors and make all creative decisions before we start filming so that we can get stuff moving quicker. We are behind schedual. The film will be premiered here in July. There will be a red carpet.

Is Palestine Still The Issue? Exhibition week.I have been very involved with the Palestine Solidarity Network at the college and have worked very hard this term to make sure an exhibition happened in the university. I felt this was incredibly important because we faced so much opposition from the university. Through doing this i have again encountered hierarchy again, however this time it has been much more difficult to find where decisions were being made. Like an invisible management system where no one was taking any responsibility. Bureaucracy, it feels like, is put in place to stop you from actually doing anything. This university is a business, and has corporate interests at heart not students. This was made shockingly clear from the struggle it was to put this exhibition on.

This was a really great week! We met many amazing people, learnt about sound and arangments from Justin and Brian.we also made instruments with one of the best instrment makers. we learnt The samba and blues from Mike(he makes hologrammes and he showed us his hologramme factory or whatever it's called and it was so coool)

         I think we all felt that it was more about the experience than the outcome.
